2014-15: Piano, Mozart and the sounds of India
From 2010 – 13, following the creation of a new approach to Samyo’s music, with a new style of learning, arrangement and notation, the orchestra developed its work with a team of composers and mentors, including primarily Anil Srinivasan, Ranajit Sengupta and Rajeeb Chakraborty.
The 2014 Annual Showcase at The Southbank Centre featured, for the first time, one of our professional mentors in a guest artist role. Pianist Anil Srinivasan performed with the orchestra, and under the guidance of Gaurav Mazumdar and Girishh Gopalakrishnan, the orchestra performed works by Mozart, Ravi Shankar, Philip Glass, Lalgudi Jayaraman and others. The new direction was daring and experimental, and reflected the innovations of Milapfest and its team of musicians and members.
This concert was repeated in the Summer Showcase at The Indika Festival in Liverpool, and following this, the next new direction featured the works of Samyo’s first composer in 2003, Dr Rajeeb Chakraborty. This time, for the 2015 concert, one half of music presented the sounds of India, with a unique ambient soundtrack of life, and compositions that reflected the rhythm, daily life and shared energy of Indian and British cities, in compositions entitled Perc At Your Own Risk, Mind the Gap, Unexpected and Urban Mantra. This original score of music weaved a musical soundscape that mirrored the lifestyles, cultures and everyday journeys of people in Britain and India.
Samyo displayed over these two years, with inspiration from film, spirituality, popular music, everyday culture and great composers, the multitude of cultures in England and the Indian subcontinent.
