The Milapfest-Liverpool Hope University partnership announces the artists who have been selected for the Instruments India Composition Commission. We received a high standard and a variety of styles and approaches of composition proposals, which resulted in a highly competitive and difficult judging process.

We are delighted to share the list of 4 participants who have been selected for the commission:

Over the coming months, the four participants will have full access to their choice of the Instruments India sound archive, from which they will create works that will be premiered in a special event at Liverpool Hope University’s Capstone Theatre in 2016, as either performances or installations.

On behalf of the panel, Alok Nayak, Milapfest’s artistic director said: “The Instruments India archive has created an unprecedented opportunity to work with high quality instrumental recordings from a variety of Indian classical instruments, performed by some of the world’s finest artists, including Tarun Bhattacharya, Shashank Subramaniam and Patri Satish Kumar. The standard of applications was very high, and it was a tough decision, but we’re happy with the originality, approach and potential in the ideas we have selected!”

Manuella Blackburn who recorded and put together the sound archive is “delighted with the diverse creative projects chosen for the commission project and is excited to see the sonic journey each project takes with the exploration of Indian musical instrument sounds. The four project proposals show genuine interest in adopting the sound materials into new electroacoustic contexts and there is great anticipation to see the end results. The new body of work this commissioning project will generate is unique in its potential to explore and experience Indian music in totally new formats.
