Opportunities for Artists
Supporting the work & professional development of South Asian Music & Dance artistes, particularly emerging artists, is an integral and central part of Milapfest’s mission & work. To achieve this, we have created a number of unique opportunities in performance, touring, training & professional development for emerging & established artists. The work Milapfest does in performance and education is linked to work which supports career development pathways for British artists.
Samyo
Samyo, National Youth Orchestra for Indian Music, a major part of our artist development work, is unique in concept and creativity. The musicians of Samyo are selected through national auditions and are open to young musicians from the age 8 to 18 years. Membership in the orchestra gives musicians unique access to a year round training from exceptional artists/ mentors, special master classes and retreats with outstanding teachers, and performing opportunities at major venues and festivals each year. Members also get special incentives and awards for the work they do with Samyo, which includes working with other Youth Orchestras. READ MORE
Tarang
Tarang, the national ensemble for Indian music is the continuation of Samyo, for ambitious muscians who are aged 19 onwards. The ensemble brings young aspiring musicians together, who are aiming to become full or part time musicians professionally. The ensemble plays new music specially composed for them and has numerous performance opportunities – from festival and conferences to headline events such as their performance at the Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Baton Relay and corporate events. Continuing Professional Development (CPD)
We have a range of Continuing Professional Development Opportunities and awards for young musicians and dancers that can help them carry their training and skills to the next level, with national and international gurus. These include 12 Travelling Fellowships, long term scholarships, training and instrument grants. This is open to dance & music artists and students.
Our two residential Summer Schools, Dance India and Music India are recognised now to be unique opportunities for young musicians and dancers of Britain and Europe to enhance their skills and learning. This work continues very strongly and is set to create satellite schools beyond Britain in coming years.
As committed members of the South Asian Dance Alliance (SADA) we are always planning a number of new initiatives to enhance career development pathway and performance opportunities for South Asian Dance & Music artists of Britain
Much of the above work will be carried out in partnership with major music organisations in Britain. The next three years will see a significant addition to the opportunities available to British artists, and Milapfest intends to be at the cutting edge of all the initiatives that enhance this work.
